(Acts 5:27-33; John 3:31-36)
Obedience to God come before obedience to man. The Spirit of God was giving Peter courage to continue doing the will of God and obeying the last command of Jesus, that is, go to the whole world preaching and baptising in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Not even the government officials could stop them. This gives us a the idea of what was driving the martyrs to a point of dying while chanting praises to God who is above anything on this earth. Thus says John the Baptist. ‘He who comes from above is above all others; and those who are blocking the good news have been weighed by earthly things. What is from above is Spirit and what is from below is matter. The Spirit gives life but matter has nothing to offer.
God loved his Son and as we await the coming of the Holy Spirit, let’s us make ourselves loveable in the eyes of God by obeying Him before anything else, putting God first before anything else.
St. Theresa of Lisieux, pray for us.
